Auto Cars Contest

Auto Insurance For Young Drivers-1

Do you need to add a family member to your policy? Your student may have bought a car, and you are shopping for coverage. If you are going to compare auto insurance, remember these points.

Check with several companies before adding a young driver to your policy. Requirements will vary from company to company. Do they have their own vehicle? You will usually get a discount for more than one vehicle. In most cases, you will have the young driver on your policy. If they live in your home, you must insure them.

Some companies will require you to insure your teenage driver on the most expensive vehicle. This means to list them as the principle driver on your car. This is usually more expensive. Not all companies require this. Make sure and find out, first.

Look for other discounts. You may be able to get ten percent or more, if your child has taken driver education training. Your teenager may be able to take a defensive driver course. This may qualify for a discount also.

Does your student get good grades? Check into discounts for that. They will need to have a 3.0 grade average of better, in most cases. Companies feel that good students are usually more careful drivers.

Is your child going away to college? Maybe they will only use your car when home on holiday. You may qualify for an infrequent driver rate. You may not need to carry them on your policy, in some areas.

How much will your son or daughter be driving? He or she may be in college and only drive your car to campus and back. This may qualify for a low mileage discount.

Is your student buying a car? The type of car will have a big influence on the coverage premiums. Sports cars and vehicles with more horsepower, will have higher rates. Will they be driving a vehicle that is ten year old or more? That may be cheaper. Pickup trucks and vans will have lower rates. Four door sedans will usually carry a lower premium too.

Make sure and talk this over with your student driver beforehand. If you are paying for the vehicle and insurance, let them know of the higher rates. If they are paying for it, coverage cost may influence their buying decision.
